This MA programme reflects the multidisciplinary nature of contemporary art, graphic design and contemporary curating, providing a creative and dynamic study environment for the practical exploration, development and cross-fertilisation of ideas with an emphasis on collaborative activity and shared experience.
On admission, each student's profile of personal experience, study interests and career aspirations is used to determine their route through the programme, leading to the appropriate named target award. Organised to run through three semesters, the course brings art and design together, through individual practice and collaborative projects, introducing students to renowned practitioners and their networks.
Group projects are designed to respond to specific situations. These allocate individual roles for artists and designers seeking professional strategies through teamwork, problem-solving in designing exhibition and installation, publication and media, providing an understanding of the cultural, commercial and media frames that will cohere as a professional practice after leaving college. The programme develops skills in criticism and presentations. A day of group seminars operates throughout the year to provide the backbone of the course and tutorials are arranged to diagnose problems and recommend ideas throughout the three semesters.
The first semester places a student in critical contexts through presentations, the second through projects outside the college, developing working relationships and practice, and the third is given over to studio production and final exhibition. Studio space and equipment (use of printing presses, darkrooms, media platforms) are fully available to produce exhibition works. The open plan digital studio is complemented by the photographic studio, darkroom facility and technical support. There are also ground floor workshops for 3D construction.
The MA will enable you to excel in your field, offering the know-how of a professional practice, building a portfolio and setting up a studio in the context of published design and public exhibition.
